Popularly acclaimed and critically revered, Rear Window is an essential cinematic experience. In light of that scrutiny, I would not make a claim to say anything spectacularly new about this masterpiece, but like my earlier post on Shadow of a Doubt , there are some specific moments that I will celebrate here.
The script is one of the wittiest that Hitchcock ever put to screen, but one moment that always gets me is one not of verbal comedy but of physical comedy. Lisa provides brandy to everyone, and for a few moments the three of them relentlessly swirl the brandy around in their snifters.
Jeffries: three people just rolling their brandy around their glasses, chatting about murder. Even though the characters in these shots are only taking a few steps across a typical apartment living room, they almost seem to gently glide through the frame in this scene. The cognac snifter glass is suggested for a traditional tasting moment, after dinner as a digestive, where it is served neat and you hold the glass to warm the cognac by hand. During dinner, drinking cognac neat is recommended.
Why are glasses different for different drinks? Different glassware have evolved in order to make different cocktails look and taste better. The function of the glass serves two purposes: to enhance aromas and correct temperatures. These are two key factors in an enjoyable drinking experience. Different shaped glasses bring out different aspects of the drink.
What are wine glasses called? A wine glass is a type of glass that is used to drink and taste wine. Most wine glasses are stemware, that is they are goblets composed of three parts: the bowl, stem, and foot. What is a lowball drink? Lowball Glasses.
The short and wide lowball glass holds 4 to 10 fluid oz. Also called a rocks glass, bartenders use the glass for simple drinks with a limited number of ingredients served over ice. Classic drinks such as scotch and soda and bourbon and water are served in a lowball glass. Which glasses for which drinks? Glassware for red wine should have a larger, rounder bowl in order to swirl the wine easily and help aerate it.
How much is a goblet of beer? Goblet or Chalice Glass They both aim to maintain a head of around one inch, use a wide mouth for easy sipping, and hold around 13 ounces of beer. Without even a hello kiss and ready to prove she can live out of a suitcase just as well as Jeff can, Lisa's poised to catch a thief, er, murderer.
Doyle's first sighting of Lisa is not with the woman herself, but, rather, with her feminine mystique. Thorwald, by means of the secrets they keep, their respective clothes and suitcases, and the appearance of guilt. For the moment, Doyle has vindicated Thorwald and all but accused Jeff and Lisa of a debatable violation of 50's-era morality. The irony is that he's wrong on both counts, and his intellectual hubris will nearly cost Jeff his life. After failing to change the subject, he stands and tries to finish off his drink as if it were a straight shot of whiskey.
It shoots out of the glass, spurting onto his jacket. In other words, Doyle clumsily shoots his load. Caffeinated Joe said…. I was watching the film again just now for like the th time and just wondered about the three of them swirling the brandy.
