If Ronny is to tell Nick at all, should he wait until after the meeting for the sake of their business? Funny, right? Well, yes and no. As we see our four leads engaged in lively conversation at a trendy restaurant, Howard intercuts between gorgeous closeups and stark black-and-white credits.
The dialogue proves similarly disorienting as it rapidly switches between small talk, philosophical inquiry and one-liners. It feels like an unstable blend of John Cassavetes, Woody Allen and Judd Apatow, an alchemy that bubbles throughout the entire movie, making for a simultaneously off-putting and stimulating experience.
And an easier film would be less sincere in a pivotal scene where Ronny and Nick speak to each other — in front of a group — with the kind of earnestness so rarely spoken between men in film or in real life.
Instead of playing it tongue-in-cheek, the film bravely hangs with its characters as they share the kind of vulnerability normally coded as weak. What parents need to know Parents need to know that this Ron Howard -directed buddy comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James takes a serious swerve pretty quickly, delving into the subject of infidelity and how it wrecks a marriage.
Unsettling and so off tone that we wonder if we are supposed to be laughing at this at all. The Dilemma is quite enjoyable until its characters stop behaving like rational adults and start acting like they've just realised they've got a film to finish. It deals with a serious issue of problems in a marriage, but it does so in such an ignorant, clumsy, sophomoric way with a sexist point of view that it loses any value, either morally or in terms of entertainment.
The man who grew up on sitcoms and then made agreeable diversions like Splash and Parenthood seems to have lost his comedic touch. Shockingly dark, the focus of "The Dilemma" is less about cheap laughs and more about the absurd humor of existential loneliness. My Movies. The Dilemma.
